Referral Chain
The full sequence of referral relationships in a multi-tier affiliate program, from the original referring partner through sub-affiliates and sub-IBs.
What it means in practice
A referral chain is the complete hierarchy of partner relationships that connects an end customer back to the original referring affiliate. In a multi-tier commission structure, each link in the chain represents a partner who recruited the next, and each earns an override commission or percentage on the activity generated downstream. A simple two-tier chain has an affiliate and a sub-affiliate; more complex structures -- common in Forex IB networks -- can extend to three, four, or more levels with a master IB at the top.
Accurate referral chain tracking is essential for correct commission calculation. When a customer converts, the platform must traverse the full chain to determine who earns what. Each level typically receives a smaller share: the direct referrer earns the standard commission, their recruiter earns a tier-2 override, and so on up the hierarchy. Errors in chain attribution -- such as broken links, circular references, or unresolved parent assignments -- can cause commission disputes and erode partner trust.
Referral chains also play a role in fraud detection. Unusually deep chains, chains where the same entity appears at multiple levels, or chains where all downstream activity originates from a single traffic source can signal self-referral schemes or artificially inflated sub-affiliate networks. Operators who monitor chain structure alongside conversion quality can identify problematic patterns before they result in significant payouts.
From a programme design perspective, operators must decide the maximum chain depth their programme supports. Deeper chains offer more recruitment incentive but increase calculation complexity and reduce the commission available at each level. Most programmes cap at two or three tiers to balance growth incentives with operational simplicity and sustainable commission waterfall economics.

Related Terms
Multi-Tier Commission
A commission structure where affiliates earn from their own referrals and from referrals made by affiliates they recruited, creating layered earning opportunities across partner tiers.
Sub-Affiliate
An affiliate recruited by another affiliate into a program, where the recruiting affiliate earns a percentage of the sub-affiliate commissions as an override.
Override Commission
An override commission is a payment made to a parent or master affiliate based on the performance of the sub-affiliates or sub-IBs they manage. It rewards partner recruitment and network management without reducing the sub-partner's own earnings.
Commission Waterfall
A commission waterfall is the sequential deduction logic that determines how gross revenue flows through cost layers before an affiliate's commission is calculated.
Multi-Tier Affiliate Program
An affiliate program structure where master affiliates recruit sub-affiliates and earn override commissions on the sub-affiliates downstream revenue, creating a hierarchy of compensation across two or more tiers.
Sub-IB
A Sub-IB is an introducing broker recruited by another IB (the master IB) rather than directly by the broker. Sub-IBs operate under a multi-tier structure where commissions cascade from the broker through the master IB layer.
Master IB
A Master IB is an introducing broker who recruits and manages a network of Sub-IBs beneath them. The Master IB earns override commissions on the trading volume generated by their downstream partners in addition to commissions on their own direct referrals.
Commission Reconciliation
Commission reconciliation is the process of verifying that affiliate payouts match actual qualified conversions before funds are released.
