Tracking Token
A tracking token is a parameter appended to an affiliate URL that carries attribution data -- such as affiliate ID, campaign, and creative -- through the conversion journey for accurate attribution.
What it means in practice
A tracking token is a key-value parameter added to a URL that identifies and classifies the traffic source responsible for a click or conversion. When a user clicks an affiliate link, the tokens embedded in the URL travel with the request and get stored -- either in the operator's system or passed through a postback -- so that every downstream event can be traced back to the affiliate, campaign, creative, or sub-ID that originated it.
Tokens serve multiple purposes. At the most basic level, a token carries the affiliate's unique identifier so the platform knows who to credit. Beyond that, affiliates use additional tokens to segment their own traffic -- for example, separating performance by ad placement, geo, or device. This granular data flows into real-time reporting dashboards and helps affiliates optimize spend while giving operators visibility into traffic quality.
Proper token implementation is critical for accurate attribution. If tokens are stripped, overwritten, or lost during redirects, conversions may go unattributed or be credited to the wrong source. Most tracking platforms define a set of supported tokens -- often called macros -- that affiliates insert into their URLs. These macros are dynamically replaced with actual values at click time, and the resulting click ID ties the full token payload to the user session within the attribution window.

If the token that identifies the affiliate is missing, the click and any resulting conversion cannot be attributed. The affiliate will not receive credit or commission for that referral.
