Conversion and Traffic Quality Benchmarks

Conversion rate is the single most compared metric in affiliate marketing, and also the most misunderstood. A 3% click-to-registration rate means something very different for a sportsbook running a $5 free bet offer than for a Forex broker requiring full KYC verification before account opening. Before you can benchmark conversion, you need to define what conversion means in your program.

Defining Your Conversion Events

Most affiliate programs track multiple conversion points along the funnel. The registration or signup is the top-of-funnel event. The first deposit (FTD) or first transaction is the qualification event that typically triggers commission payment. Some programs track deeper events like first trade, first bet settled, or 30-day retention.

When benchmarking, always specify which conversion event you are measuring. A program reporting a 12% conversion rate on registrations and one reporting 2% on FTDs are measuring completely different things.

Forex conversion rates are structurally lower than iGaming because KYC requirements are heavier, account verification takes longer, and the barrier to first deposit is higher. Do not compare Forex funnel rates to iGaming without adjusting for these differences.

Earnings Per Click (EPC)

EPC divides total affiliate earnings by total clicks delivered. It is the single metric that best captures the combined effect of conversion rate, average deposit value, and commission structure. An EPC of $0.80 in iGaming means that for every click an affiliate sends, the program pays $0.80 in commission on average.

Forex EPC appears higher because the revenue per converted client is significantly larger. A single active Forex trader generating $500/month in spreads supports a much higher commission than a casino player depositing $50. This is why cross-vertical EPC comparisons are misleading without revenue context.

Traffic Quality Indicators

Conversion rate alone does not tell you about traffic quality. A program with 15% click-to-registration but 5% FTD-to-active has a quality problem -- affiliates are driving signups that do not convert to real customers. Track these supplementary quality indicators alongside conversion:

  • Bounce rate on affiliate landing pages (benchmark: under 60% for iGaming, under 50% for Forex)
  • Time-to-FTD from registration (benchmark: under 48 hours for 50%+ of registrations in iGaming)
  • FTD-to-second-deposit ratio (benchmark: 25-40% in iGaming, 20-30% in Forex)
  • Chargeback rate on affiliate-sourced deposits (benchmark: under 1.5%)
  • Duplicate or multi-account rate (benchmark: under 3%)

If your click-to-registration rate is significantly above the vertical benchmark but your FTD rate is below it, investigate the traffic sources. This pattern often indicates incentivized registrations, bot traffic, or misleading creative that overpromises.
