Affiliate Link Cloaking

Affiliate link cloaking is the practice of transforming long, parameter-heavy affiliate links into cleaner, often branded URLs that redirect to the same destination. A typical raw tracking URL contains partner IDs, sub-IDs, click tokens, and campaign identifiers -- resulting in URLs that can exceed 200 characters. Cloaking replaces this with a concise URL (e.g., "yoursite.com/go/broker") that performs a server-side redirect, passing all tracking parameters transparently to the destination platform.

The primary benefits of cloaking are practical. Cleaner URLs generate higher click-through rates because users are more likely to click a branded, recognizable link than a long string of tracking parameters. Cloaked links also protect against commission theft: without cloaking, a savvy user could strip the affiliate's tracking parameters from the URL and navigate directly to the offer, bypassing referral credit. From a management perspective, cloaking provides centralized redirect control -- if an affiliate switches programs or needs to update an offer, they change the redirect destination once rather than editing every link across their site, email campaigns, and social media profiles.

Cloaking carries important caveats. Some affiliate programs prohibit cloaked links in their terms of service because they obscure the traffic source from the operator's perspective. Misconfigured redirects can break S2S tracking chains or prevent cookies from being set correctly, leading to lost attribution. Social media platforms and advertising networks may also restrict or flag redirected URLs, which can reduce distribution reach. Affiliates in regulated verticals should also be aware that responsible gambling disclosure requirements and advertising standards may govern how links are presented to consumers, regardless of whether the underlying URL is cloaked.
